Our Approach to Kayak Training
Here is a breakdown of a one day, 2+ hour course to give you an idea of what to expect. We divide our lessons into distinct sections to allow time for various learning styles, while focusing on the elements of a successful balance, roll and stroke.
Although larger groups can also make a course social, too large of a group can detract from the quality of instruction when it comes to learning to roll a kayak. Becase of this, we aim to keep our kayak rolling instruction in particular to a maximum 1:2 instructor-to-client ratio* to ensure close attention to techniques.Â
* Paddle Canada courses will be able to accommodate more people. PC Skills Level 1 is a two-day course.
Arrival and Unloading
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the course starts to get the most out of the session.
Who, Why and How
After introductions to get to know client needs and experience, we'll explore the physics, timing and coordination of rolls and strokes. We'll practice on land to troubleshoot before we get into our kayaks.
On Water Practice
Next, you'll put into action key techniques and strategies that we explored that are specific to your needs. For rolling practice, you will be fully immersed.
Review and Wrap Up
Lastly, we'll have a short review of lessons learned and what went well. You'll be given tips for improving your technique to take away and practice.
